Today, I'm thankful for the power of silence.
It’s NEVER quiet in my head. I have thoughts clanging around in there at all times, we all do! There's so much input happening around us all day, everyday. More and more as time and has gone on and technology has advanced. We walk around with a powerful computer in our pockets - or actually, our hands. I am as guilty as anyone for allowing myself to be seduced by instant information. A question pops into my monkey brain, and with a few clicks on my device, I have my answer! I've also found that my work hours have become blurred by having that handy device. It has become harder to set aside the emails and texts when they come, easier to just send a quick reply. Add in TV, radio, family and friends, zoom calls… you get the drift. It’s never quiet - however I deliberately and consciously find that space.
My favorite way to sit with the quiet is to go outside. Obviously, it’s never totally silent, BUT the sounds that I hear speak to my heart and soul: the wind blowing, leaves rustling, the birds calling to each other. I think of this time as separate from my meditations or spiritual practice, but really just time for ME. For that, I’m grateful.
